Cardiac and Respiratory Health

One of the best health benefits includes a healthier heart and lungs, as well as increased core strength and core stability.
Tennis requires constant movement. Running after the yellow ball and moving around the court increases cardiac and respiratory health, improving your upper body strength and reducing also body fat. Low body fat equals less risk of suffering from high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, strokes, or other type of chronic diseases. Furthermore, regular exercise leads to an increased volume of the heart, meaning better blood circulation.

Strength and Stability

During a game of tennis, many muscles in your upper and lower body activate. This will cause an increase in your muscle mass, both in your legs and arms. Another proven benefit is that the gain of stability helps to prevent falls while enhancing your coordination and reflex.

Using the racket will use your deltoids, biceps, triceps and forearm muscles. Swinging a forehand requires great strength and stability in the core muscles too. Having strong oblique muscles will help produce more power and it will protect you against possible injury. The downside? Maybe you’ll have one arm stronger than the other, so try to change it from time to time.

The lower body is also in constant movement even when it’s not necessarily moving. For example, as you are waiting for the ball in your power position, your legs will be pressed into the ground and ready to exert power in your chosen direction. Running to and from the net while doing forehands and backhands will engage your lower body and core when you bring your arm back to return the ball.

Mental health

One of the side effects of the pandemic was anxiety, depression and stress. Many people are still suffering from these mental health problems since then. Although any kind of exercise will to help to reduce stress and boost endorphins, tennis is one of the best remedies to this mental health pandemic since it is a sport that requires focus. When you focus on the goal, you are connected to the present. This is a way of meditating. Tennis is also a way of socializing.
