Skincare tips for 55+ adults
Skin Aging is a natural process that happens when the skin starts to lose its ability to regenerate itself. Although skin aging is inevitable, there are many ways to prevent its acceleration. Below are three main skincare tips, but before getting into those, it’s important to know what your skin type is.
Depending on your skin type, your skin may thicken or get thinner with aging, meaning you’ll need to treat it accordingly. Oily skin tends to have fewer wrinkles when aging, whereas more dry skin may age a little faster. It all depends on how you’ve been treating your skin so far in life, for example with exposure to a lot of sun or cold wind. Regardless of the following recommendations, consult with a certified dermatologist first to know the best course of procedure for your skin type.
Now, moving on to the skincare tips
Older skin tends to get dryer with time, being much more sensitive and vulnerable to external aggressions. That’s the reason why good hydration both at a dermic and systemic level is important. Hence, you should always drink water and be cautious to other external factors, such as the sun or water. For example, some simple changes to your bath time can reduce (or alleviate) dry, itchy skin and prevent it from becoming a serious problem. Use warm, instead of hot, water, and avoid fragranced soaps. Another tip is to use humidifiers which are great for adding moisture to the air in dry climates and weather conditions.
Check your skin
Getting a regular check is necessary to prevent skin disease. As you age, the risk of getting skin disease increases. But don’t be alarmed. A regular visit to the dermatologist will ensure you catch anything before it gets bad. As well as professional consultation, be sure to check for any signs such as an irregular itching or moles that alarm you.
Always use sunscreen
This is probably the most known basic tip of them all, but truly, using a sunscreen every day does make the difference. UV rays are detrimental to our skin, accelerating the aging process because of the harmful ultraviolet radiation. Even on cloudy days, our skin is susceptible to the sun’s rays which can lead to skin cancer, discoloration, and wrinkles over time.
For day-to-day use and a skincare routine, pick a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. If you spend time outdoors, choose a product with SPF 60 or greater. In reality, most people do not use as much sunscreen as they should, and this higher SPF helps to compensate for this.
