Lake Wylie: The Perfect Getaway in Charlotte

Lake Wylie: a man-made lake in the U.S. states of South Carolina and North Carolina that extends to around 13,400 acres and features 325 miles of shoreline, from which residents of nearby cities including Charlotte, Fort Mill, and Rock Hill can spend days enjoying the views and engaging in a wide range of exciting activities.

Some history about Lake Wylie

Lake Wylie is the oldest of the 11 lakes in the Catawba River basin, once occupied by a tribe that called themselves the Catawba (“People of the River”), from which the river takes its name. The lake was created in 1904 in order to generate hydroelectric power. It was named after Dr. W. Gill Wylie in 1960, original author of the dam that subsequently created the body of water that stretches between the South Point Township of North Carolina and South Carolina’s Tega Cay, Rock Hill and Fort Mill areas.

What started as a few “river cabins” along the shoreline decades ago never stopped growing. Lake Wylie became a recreational destination and a tempting residential location for big commercial centers and surrounding cities in both North and South Carolina, such as Charlotte NC, Rock Hill SC, Clover SC, Tega Cay SC, Belmont NC and Fort Mill SC. Residents of this area, known for their candid and welcoming disposition, are dedicated to improving the atmosphere for newcomers to enjoy their home and help businesses flourish under appropriate regulations to ensure infrastructure improvements.

Spending the day on this reservoir offers a wide range of activities for visitors and is a go-to for Charlotte residents for the perfect getaway after a long week at work. Lake Wylie buzzes with new developments as growth continues and more families choose lake living as a lifestyle choice, so waterfront property is increasing its value as it becomes more scarce.

For people choosing to relocate to Charlotte, Lake Wylie has a magnetic pull: beautiful neighborhoods and views, plenty of cultural and sports activities to choose from and unique attractions reserved for the lucky residents that can flaunt a waterfront property.
