How a social environment influences healthy aging

During Covid-19, socializing face-to-face was made incredibly difficult. Though everyone suffered from a lack of interaction, two groups that possibly felt it most were children and seniors, considering these two stages in life are usually high in active socializing. As it’s commonly known, human interaction can positively affect our general well-being. Here are some of the reasons why it is important to cultivate a rich social environment.

Mental Health

Firstly, socializing benefits mental health. When interacting with people, endorphins abound. This makes us feel good about ourselves, increasing our self-esteem. Also, it helps with cognition and memory. For instance, when chatting with a friend, your brain uses cognitive muscles. You are learning new information about someone and the exercise of recalling information about another person activates your memory. Another positive impact on your mental health is that socializing can help reduce the early stages of dementia. This is because listening to other people’s problems engages our problem-solving skills, which is great for some brain exercise. Last but definitely not least, socializing can reduce anxiety and depression, and any other mental health issues. The increase in well-being that results from socializing can then in turn lower the severity of chronic illness, and thus lower the chances of earlier mortality.

Physical Health

Some claim socializing is equally important as diet and exercise later on in life. Not only because of the previously mentioned benefits for your mental health, but because engagement with other people tends to result in activities that imply some form of exercise. Maybe you are going out to get lunch with your pal or playing a tennis match. Either way, you are walking, running, or just enjoying the sun. This is key to having good health.
